It’s almost back to school time! Crazy how fast the summer goes every year isn’t it? I thought it would fun today to talk about the kinds of moms you see on the first day of school each year. (We’ve covered moms at preschool drop-off and moms at Target already.)
I asked other mama’s and my friends on Facebook how they feel on this particular day. Here’s what we came up with – what do you think? (To be honest, I’ll bet almost everyone is a big mixture of all of these. So many emotions!)
Moms You See On The First Day of School
(affiliate links included)
1. Emotional Mom. Her baby is another year older and although she is aware of this fact, occasions like this shove it right in her face and force her to acknowledge it. She’ll cry a lot today.
2. Kindergarten Mom. She falls into a sub-category of emotional mom. This is the first of the first, the emotional of all emotional. The symbolism of starting school proves to her that this little one really isn’t a baby anymore, even though she still calls him that sometimes. She will try to keep her tears on hold until she has left the building so she doesn’t upset him, but they’re coming and they will fall hard.
3. Scrapbook Mom. Her child is holding an adorable handmade chalkboard sign with his name and grade on it. She’s holding a bulky camera and documenting every step and every detail from the monogrammed backpack to his brand new shoes.
4. Nervous Mom. Will she know how to find her classroom? Will she make new friends? Will she have someone to it with at lunch? Will she be able to get her buttons buttoned and her laces tied? So many questions and so many fears go through this moms head. She will cross her fingers and hope for the best while she bites her nails and watches the clock waiting for 3pm.
5. Excited Mom. It’s been a looooong summer and although it was fun, she is so ready for the structure that the school year brings. She is happy to have her kiddo back on a regular sleeping pattern and to hear, “I’m bored!” a lot less.
I’ll end this the same way I end each one, reminding you that NO MATTER what kind of mom you are, you are the best. Keep doing what you’re doing!
Tell me in the comments how you think you’ll be feeling this year. Remember this is a friendly community – hateful and nasty comments will absolutely be deleted.
Liz is a just a mom trying to keep it real about how little she sleeps, how often she gets puked on and how much she loves them. You can find her here every day writing about real-mom moments.

I am so #3, but can be a mix of some of the others, too. As I was taking pic’s of my kids walking into the school last year, I was carrying a box of tissue to donate to a classroom. One of the parents told me not to cry, it’d be okay. Oops. LOL

it is not only Kindergarten, taking my baby to college was so emotional I cried for two hours on the drive home from setting her up in her dorm room.

When I went away to college, knowing my Mom was going to have a hard time, as I’m the oldest and only girl. I had made her in secret a sweatshirt saying that she was the most awesome Mom, Daughter, Sister, Wife, etc. Then I got on my trusty bike and mailed it home. I think it helped. That was back in 1988 (yes I’m dating myself).

With my youngest son starting his second year of college I still get a little bit emotional but I was always Ok as I knew that they were ready for that next step.

There’s also the “Works at the School” Mom. I’m not a teacher, though, so they have come to work with me all summer. Like the excited Mom, I’m glad that they can get back to a more structured routine. I’m even more excited to still be with them everyday, and I get to see their friends. Best. Job. Ever!

Guess I’m a little all of them rolled up into one but mostly the emotional mom because I have a 20 yr old, 13 yr old and a 5 yr old. So, this year my last baby boy will start kindergarten. How bittersweet! I’m trying to really not think about it a lot right now because he is so excited about going to big school. Despite my heart strings, I want him to stay excited. Good luck all!

OMG, I’m a kindergarten mom! Lol

It’s so funny. I see every type parent at my kids school. I can name each one. I’m the excited parent. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love having my 17 and 15 year olds at home, wouldn’t have it any other way, but the first day of school I get so happy because we all are back on a routine and once they head off to school(and my tears dry)I’m a cleaning fool with the radio on MY station.

I am always sad when my kids head off for their first day of school. I have 5 of them going this year and i always hate when summer is over. I love all the stuff they learn and create through the school year but i love having them home. I have one in K, 5th, 7th, 10th and 11th. It is nice to have a cleaner house lol but i miss the craziness the summer brings.

Oh wow, gosh… well, I’ve been 1-4 all more than once. … but for the first time this year … I was not… I was #5 🙂 Our boy is now 10, off to 4th and doing great with his new IEP in place so no more struggles with school. Our 6 year old girl is off to 1st and she is pretty much an adult trapped in a child’s body. They are fine. They adapt well. I did a good job teaching them to handle themselves and this past first week of school has shown me just THAT.

Pretty sure I’ll be #5 with maybe a little of #4 mixed in for my daughter. She’s starting 1st grade and she sometimes has a little trouble making friends. My son, who’s starting 4th, I have no worries about.
Angie says
Along with kindergarten mom is the subset of senior mom. It’s so bittersweet the first day ever of school but I am discovering that them having the very last first day of school is just as emotional. Maybe more so since I can’t walk them to their class. But for my other kids. It’s definitely #5.

Everyone kept asking me ‘Are you gonna cry when you drop him off’? I told them all, I’m not sure I think I’ve had ample time to come to terms with it, but Ya never know haha. Low and behold. The second I had to go and he wanted to go play on the playground while waiting for his class to gather, as I give my baby a hug and kiss goodbye, and another, and another, my heart and mind go wild, and I felt the tears trying to run free. Bittersweet is definitely the description. But I’m excited to hear about everything he experiences and to help him learn and grow every day. My grown little man.

This year I’m a Kindergarten Mom and a Nervous Mom. Normally I’m just an Emotional Mom, but this year not only is my baby starting Kindergarten (OK I’m choking up just typing this), but my older girl who’s going into 4th grade is also changing schools, due to issues at her old school. So I’m nervous because I don’t know who she’ll know. I do suspect though that there will be at least one child there from her old school, so she won’t be totally in the dark. I’m still nervous. She does make new friends really fast so that’s a blessing.
I work full time so I normally go in late the first day of school to make sure they get all of the massive amounts of school supplies carried in, then it’s up to them to get to latch key. Funny story about that, on my daughter’s first day of Kindergarten, I took the whole day off (it was my first child going to school) I purposely left her to get to latch key but I was going to pick her up ½ hour after school let out, I wanted her to find her way. She never went to latch key, the office called me, so I had to tell them she was supposed to be in latch key but I was on my way. I did ask them to send her there so she knew where she was going though. She never made that mistake again.

As a teacer myself as well as a mom I’m not actually able to be ‘mom’ on the first day of school. Kindergarten for my son (he’ll now be a Junior) was absolutely heart wrenching. My daughter’s (she’ll be a 7th grader) wasn’t as bad. I’m not so emotional every year because I can’t be. How can I cry in front of my kindergarten and first graders? I think that’s good and bad in a way. 🙂 🙁 I’m sure my son’s Senior year will be bad, though…and my daighter’s first day of high school in two years.

#6 The Slacker Mom who stands there and realizes she forgot this and forgot that and she doesn’t have a chalkboard for pictures and she’s lucky to get her kids to school on time!!

I am number five mom and proud of it and my three children too, the oldest twelve, middle ten and the baby is seven, thank God! Now when I drop my baby off to college, what will I be? Can’t wait to experience it.

Are you forgetting the dads? There are many who do the same. Personally, I’m happy to drop my 6 year old off at school. I can get back to work and I have some element of freedom back in my life!
