Of all the reasons to be angry about Jussie Smollett allegedly staging his attack for his own benefit, this is the thing that should really make people furious.
If what we are hearing is true, that Jussie Smollett paid two men to help him stage a horrific attack based on his race and sexual orientation you could be angry for any number of reasons:
- That he used valuable police resources in a city full of crime to find a criminal that didn’t exist.
- He easily could have caused suffering to an innocent person fitting the description.
- As the Chicago Police put it he: “took advantage of the pain and anger of racism”
- He convinced people to feel sorry for him, publicly defend and support him.
Those are all incredibly valid reasons to be upset. But let me tell you the worst part… in my completely unimportant opinion:
Any person making a false claim is chipping away at the believability of every other real victim.
You are causing suffering to everyone that will be a victim of an actual crime. Someone that may really NEED an advocate to believe in them and fight for them.
Will we believe the next person that is attacked?
Will we look at them now through our Jussie Smollett colored lenses?
Will we start demanding more and more proof from victims?
Every time a false report is filed, you’ve helped to cast doubt over another.
You unwittingly damage the credibility of every other victim.
He should be ashamed of himself of all the damage he’s done, if in fact he is guilty of the felony charged against him. The consequences of those actions could be long-lasting and devastating.
And completely unnecessary.
