My little ones are just in the process of learning how to read and mastering the skill. It is something that is honestly quite beautiful to see happen.
I adore reading and love to keep my nose buried in a book. I want my kids to love reading as well so I have a few things I’m doing to encourage it. These four tips are very simple!
4 Tips To Encourage Kids To Love Reading
Make it easy.
Keeping an assortment of books around the house that they can grab when they want is super important. This way, any time the mood strikes to read, they have something to choose from. Right now you can build an awesome library by earning free books with the Fantastic Scholastic book giveaway.
There are over 80 titles of full-length Scholastic books to choose from! You can get all the details here, including a full list of available Scholastic titles and how to redeem for your free books.
Let them choose the book.
Letting them be in charge of the things they read is one of the most crucial components. I love this amazing quote by James Patterson, “There’s no such thing as a kid who hates reading. There are kids who love reading, and kids who are reading the wrong books.”
If they start a book they don’t like, let them move onto something else. If they find a book they love, go find more books by that author so it will have a similar style.
Find a book that was made into a movie.
We have had such a fun time reading books with the goal of watching the movie when we are finished. It gives the kids something to look forward to for accomplishing the task of getting to the end.
Let them see you read.
No matter if it’s great literature, a cheesy novel or a magazine, let your kids see you reading often. Showing that reading is important and more importantly fun, is a great way to make sure your kids see how valuable it is.
Keeping up with these as they progress in their reading levels will help to ensure your kids always have a love of reading!
