How To Make An Emergency Kit for Kids

diy

An Emergency Kit for Kids is something every household should have stocked and ready to go. Here’s how we made ours.

Where I live, in Kansas, we are inside what’s called ‘Tornado Alley’. (The area of the US with the most tornados.) Each year we watch story after story or families stranded and without a home.

I also see stories on the news and in my social media feed of families surviving earthquakes and other natural disasters.

Having an emergency kit for kids that is lightly packed with a few items is not going to make a natural disaster go away; but it might give you some peace of mind like it has done for me.

Keep these in one of your hall closets ready to go if you ever need it. Once a year, go through it and exchange things for bigger sizes and trade out anything that is expired.

What to Put In An Emergency Kit for Kids

  • An extra set of clothes. Top, bottoms, underwear and socks. Put this in a waterproof bag.
  • A few snacks. We did granola bars and Cheerios.
  • Bandaids
  • Butterfly closures
  • Antiseptic wipes
  • Alcohol wipes
  • Antibiotic cream
  • Ice pack
  • Children’s pain reliever
  • Hair ties
  • A few small bills and change
  • Photo identification

Make sure that everything is packed into a Ziploc bag or some other sort of bag that will keep water out.

For our clothes, I used a wet/dry bag like you would use for bathing suits after trips to the pool like this one.

If you don’t have some kind of identification for your kids that’s OK. There are a few printable options you can use, or you can simply grab the latest school photo and write your information on the back. Easy peasy.

  • Stuffed animal
  • Book/Coloring book
  • Bottle of water
  • Flashlight
  • Poncho
  • An extra pair of shoes
  • Drip Drop dehydration relief
