Beautiful Imperfection

This morning our Giant Schnauzer Sullivan decided the best way to start the day was to throw up a cardboard box that he’d found sometime during the night. While I was washing my hands after cleaning it up, I heard Paityn yell, “Mommy!” She was sitting on the sofa, empty Dora cup on the cushion beside her, completely drenched in milk. Brady, ever the helpful big brother, was trying to clean her up with toilet paper because it was the only thing he could reach. By now Sullivan has forgotten what happens to puppies who are gluttons and is greedily lapping up anything milk-scented – including the kids.

It was what we in the Motherhood business call a perfect storm.

As I was just about to do what Moms do, I stopped in my tracks and took in the scene. There they were, the great loves of my life, having this moment together that was messy and chaotic and loud. But, looking at it through my Mommy goggles, it was beautiful.

I’ve been doing this Mom thing for 5 years now, so I am pretty much a well-oiled machine when it comes to cleaning up everything from toddler puke to potty accidents. If I had to count how many times a day I wash my hands, I might actually be some kind of world record holder. My hands are routinely as dry as the Mojave Desert and just as rough.

Not a dry sensation at all, mind you. Quite the contrary. My hands actually feel like they are normal “non-Mommy” hands.
