Carry-on luggage advice

Uncategorized

Monday Guy and I are hopping a plan to Florida for the week which will be my first trip with my DSLR camera. I can’t wait to see the difference in vacation pics with this – I’m hoping to get some great beach photos and sunsets.

So my question is, how do I transport the camera from here to there? I keep it in a nice Canon, padded camera bag so it’s my guess that it would be much too bulky to shove in a suitcase. More importantly, even though it is padded, I don’t like the picture I see of an airport employee tossing my bag up into the plane. I thought I had an easy solution, take the camera bag as a carry-on. I’ve got a problem with that though, which is the layover and walking around the Dallas airport for an hour with an obvious camera bag with CANNON written across it. Hey look! That 5’2″ woman is carrying expensive photography equipment! Even though my equipment is not nearly as expensive as most, its still pricey.

Am I being over dramatic here? My question to you all with expensive accessories, whether it be camera, laptops, jewelry etc – how do you get it back and forth and make sure it stays safe?

just don’t let it out of your site, keep the bag on your shoulder at all times, of if you have a large knapsack but the camera bag in there so no one sees what you’re carrying. Good luck and have fun, can’t wait to see the pics!

I always carry on things that are important to me because I do NOT trust the airport workers. No way jose. Bring that camera as a carry-on and hold it close by!

Carry it on for sure. When I flew to Scotland in May I watched them loading our luggage onto the plane from the terminal and I wanted to run out there and yell “STOP”. They were so careless with those bags that I was afraid my shoes would be broken.

Hmm I’d say make sure it’s well wrapped and padded (scarves, soft tank tops, etc), and carry it in your normal carry-on. You’ll have to forgo the nice bag while you’re on vacation, but it’ll be with you (no tossing) and disguised (no stealing)

Agreed that you should never let it out of your site (unless it’s in the overhead bin that is). DO NOT under any circumstances check it. Don’t worry about wandering around airports though with the obvious bag, I have a huge camera/laptop backpack with thousands of $$ of equipment in it and I’ve never had a problem (I’m also 5’2″ and usually travel alone) even in foreign countries. Airports are typically going to be really safe. I always work on my expensive-looking laptop during layovers with my bag sitting next to me (I always keep an eye or a foot on it, but I’ve never had a problem). I fly about twice per month on average at least. Good luck!

I bought a holster for my Nikon DSLR. That way I can fit it safely in my purse or carry on.

That’s funny you asked because I just took mine with me to Costa Rica. I have a smallish case for it so I was able to stuff into my book bag which was my carry on. I would have it as a carry on. I don’t trust checking bags!
