Doctors are starting to use oysters to treat anxiety and depression, here’s why.
We all know that the food we eat affects our bodies. But a doctor at Columbia University is being specific about a certain food: oysters.
Oysters Can Be Used to Treat Anxiety & Depression
Dr. Ramsey is an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry and has two reasons why oysters are so great for helping to treat anxiety and depression:
High amounts of B12 and long chain omega-3 fatty acids.
Studies have shown that B12 helps reduce brain shrinkage and when you have a shortage of omega-3’s you can have higher risks of depression.
Oysters are full of both of those important vitamins.
Dr. Ramsey isn’t just a fan of oysters to treat anxiety, he is an advocate for using all sorts of healthy food to boost your brain health. Kale, nuts and even dark chocolate are good choices.
Another amazing point that Dr. Ramsey makes is how often we change our diet to help us with things like weight-loss and lowering blood pressure. People are quick to make diet changes for those issues but don’t also correlate the food they eat to their mental health.
I love his Ted Talk where he explains this quickly:
So if you’re ready to try oysters, here’s a good place to start…
If you like oysters and have a favorite way to eat them leave a comment below for us!
Liz is a just a mom trying to keep it real about how little she sleeps, how often she gets puked on and how much she loves them. You can find her here every day writing about real-mom moments.

Hello! My old therapist Jeff Rodriguez has been nothing but exceptional. I have truly appreciated the time I have been able to spend with him over the last week. I search forward to speaking with him every day. He provides great advice that I am able to put into action. Jeff is wonderful and makes it very easy to open up. He is good at both: listening and engaging in conversation. Thanks to this https://us.calmerry.com/blog/anxiety/at-the-mercy-of-likes-how-social-media-fuels-social-anxiety/ therapy for the meeting that changed my whole life!!!
