The last few days I have been frantically trying to disinfect our home after a stomach bug invaded our house. I try so desperately to remove the germs as fast as possible to keep our house fresh and decontaminated. With two small kids and full-time jobs, we want to stay as healthy as we possibly can!
We all obviously know how to clean our homes but after the last few days I’ve been thinking beyond that. I want the walls clean, the couch cushions clean, and the air clean. How could I get that done without just dousing the whole place in bleach?

First and foremost, open your windows.
I don’t care how cold or hot it is, you’ve got to get some fresh air in there! Stay under several blankets if it’s cold outside or run a fan if it’s warm. If you’re up to it, this would be a good time to get out of the house for a bit. Maybe even just go for a drive. Opening the house up lets fresh air come in and the bad stuff get out. You don’t want all that bacteria trapped inside.
Diffuse Thieves essential oil.
This is my favorite! If you haven’t heard all the rage over Thieves oil, it’s a blend of essential oil that is believed to eliminate airborne bacteria. There is even research behind it being able to naturally kill black mold. This stuff is legit. Put some in your diffuser and let it clean your air. I buy mine wholesale, you can see how here.
Clean.
Like I said, you all know how to clean your house, but here are a few ways that I like to disinfect naturally. I feel like it’s better for my kids and it even works better.
- Shark – I love cleaning the floors with our Shark mop because it uses nothing but steam to disinfect. No chemicals at all.
- Better Life – I’ve talked about these cleaners before and how much I adore them. They are the most amazing all natural cleaners.
- DIY Febreze – Make your couch, rugs, mattress and other surfaces in your home smell great with this homemade Febreze recipe.
- Homemade Carpet Deodorizer – Clean your carpets with this homemade concoction. Makes your carpets smell great!
How do you make sure your house is cleared of germs after an illness?

Liz is a just a mom trying to keep it real about how little she sleeps, how often she gets puked on and how much she loves them. You can find her here every day writing about real-mom moments.
Some really great tips and I know exactly what you mean, you can sometimes almost smell the illness in the air. Thanks so much for sharing with the Monday #pinitparty. Have pinned and shared. 🙂
I am constantly airing out the house when someone is sick! I actually try to do it at least once a week even if no one is sick. Loving Thieves oil right now, too!
