There’s an area behind our couch that my kids like to play in. It’s the perfect little nook for a fort and makes the best hiding place.
Since they sneak back there to play all the time, when my daughter was making trips there from the play room I wasn’t concerned. Until I heard it.
I heard the sound of small toys tumbling out of a bag into a pile of other toys that had apparently been stashed there. I looked behind the couch and saw the work of a very meticulous three-year-old building her secret stash of toys in preparation for an apparent shortage.
Our son was having a sleep over, so with three little boys in the middle of a very important game of pretend football (complete with tackling and screaming) my attention was diverted.
Sitting my coffee cup in the worst possible place made perfect sense as I rushed to command her to clean her mess up. In which she replied with a stern, “no.”
“Well, who is going to clean this up then? Me?” I asked
“Nobody.” she said
I guess her plan was to leave it there which sounds a lot better than the alternative in all honesty (which is me back there sorting through mounds of toys).
It was then, of course, that my poor coffee placement came back to haunt me. Yes, it was knocked over by a few miniature football players.
This is the type of mess I call on my Brawny paper towels for. I am a firm believer that for spills the absolute most important thing is to soak up the mess. Cleaners and scrubbers come long after this first step. If you have a paper towel that can help you get all of that gunk OUT of the carpet, the job is half way done.
