Mom, You Need To Be In The Photos

I’m always a little self-conscious about something. There is always a reason for me to hide behind the camera and never get in front of it. It’s easy to do after all, because I’m the photographer in the family. It’s a great way to never have to actually be in a photo – just keep taking pictures. I have been purposely putting off new family photos, even though my youngest was a baby the last time they were done. (She turns four next month.) I keep waiting for one more “thing” to be complete. To whiten my teeth, grow my hair out, lose a few pounds, get a spray tan…

But when I look around at the images hanging in frames around my home, I realize quickly what is really important about them: it is the beauty of our family’s love for one another. The way we giggle at the fake smiles our kids make when the say “cheese” and the way my son squeezes me so hard it almost hurts when he hugs me. Those incredibly sweet moments that will never be captured if we don’t put down our guards and choose to get in front of the camera. How would you feel if you were to fast forward a decade and remember sweet memories but not have a single photo of any of them?

I want to encourage you not to be so stubborn. After all, your children love you the way you are right this second. They love you with short hair, long hair, or no hair. Twenty pounds overweight or in perfect shape. They just don’t care about any of that.
